The new ConvertibleIntel Classmate PC includes new
education-specific hardware features and software
applications. The cost effective and flexible devices, being
shown publically for the first time anywhere in the world, are
anticipated to be of particular interest to schools pursuing a 1:1
eLearning model.
The new Classmate PCs are equipped with the new "Cedar Trail"
Intel Atom Chipset, providing the hugely popular global learning
device with a Dual Core processor for the first time. In addition
to improved hardware, the device also comes bundled with the latest
Intel Learning Series software suite, bringing with it a secure
platform with enhanced management. The new Classmate PC remains
affordable and durable and aids classroom collaboration and group
teaching with greater file distribution and collection features.
The devices' flexibility and robustness also allows them to convert
easily from 'clamshell' keyboard-based operation to touch-optimised
tablets.
The improved technical flexibility of the new Classmate PC
allows school administrators to run platforms over a local area
network (LAN) and to view and manage students' computers from
school or LEA servers, including performing rapid multiple-device
software upgrades without impacting upon performance. The platform
brings improved security against uninstalling applications or
changing settings and also incorporates enhanced recovery, backup
and restore functions.
Improved features to assist with education process include an
improved WebCam Companion, Pen Input, Note Taker, Painting and
Drawing, E-Reader and LabCam. These features provide a more natural
writing experience with a pressure-sensing digitiser and an
enhanced capability for e-reading that supports multiple
formats.
David Vernon, the member of the leadership team responsible for
Progress and Standards at Broadgreen County Primary in Liverpool,
says, "The Convertible Classmate PC is the ideal product for our
learning environment. The PC is going to get knocked around during
the day. Its casing is really robust, so it's really well
protected. It can be dropped and it still works fine. The swivel
screen is also a great feature- it can be turned into a tablet, and
touch screen functionality also adds another great dimension to the
product."
